Woodpecker

Occurs in well wooded areas of the county. Uses its strong bill to bore its nest hole in a tree trunk. Feeds on insects and their larvae.

 

Most common and widespread of the three British woodpeckers.    

Voice-Explosive chack, drums frequently.     

Habitat-Widespread year-round across much of Europe except Ireland and farthest N regions.       

Nest-Excavates hole in tree.  

Diet-Probes into bark crevices and hacks away loose bark to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects.
