The Great River Ouse flows for some 46 miles through the county. Above Bedford it winds in a series of great loops, in some parts wide and shallow, in other narrow and deep. Below the Town Bridge it is navigable to the sea and the course is straighter and the depth more uniform. With its tributaries the Ouse provides a range of slightly varying habitats.
