Common on all freshwater with peripheral vegetation. Nests on or beside th water. Feeds in adjacent grassland as well as on aquatic plants and animals.

A well-marked aquatic bird.

Voice: various singing calls including whittuck

Nest: bulky mound of waterweed often in open water.

Diet: mainly vegetable matter including seeds, fruits and leaves.
