Greater Crested Grebe

Inhabits areas of open water in the county. Nests among vegetation usually near the water's edge. A diving bird, feeding chiefly on fish.

A beautiful aquatic species that was severely reduced by nineteenth century plume hunters.        

Voice-Guttural croaks and honks in summer.    

Habitat-Widespread except in far N.        

Nest-Raft of waterweed moored to reeds.      

Diet-Fish, insects and their larvae, crustaceans and molluscs are all important, as is vegetable matter.
