Regular passage migrant and occasional winter visitor. Visits lakes and flooded pits. Probes soft ground with its large bill for shellfish, insects and worms.

Britain’s largest wader and a familiar bird throughout the country.    

Voice-Coor-lee at all times, bubbling song in display flight over breeding territory.       

Habitat-Summer visitor to N and north central Europe, year-round resident, migrant or winter visitor to W and on S coasts.    

Nest-Well-concealed grassy cup on ground.         

Diet-Lugworms, molluscs, crustaceans, and fish.
